Wednesday (2022): The New Wednesday Addams
I know most, if not everyone, on the internet has heard of the new show Wednesday on Netflix—you know, the one that premiered in late 2022 and drove the tiktokkers crazy replicating Jenna Ortega’s wonderfully quirky dance in various trendy videos to Lady Gaga’s Bloody Mary? Yeah, that one.
There has been a lot of critique about the show too, but one thing that really stuck out to me was the fact that Wednesday was allowed to really become a well-rounded character. Her attitude, her sense of style, her unwillingness to have feelings or show emotions (except for that one time)… I feel like it was very much a character that I could have used growing up. While I was blessed with Christina Ricci’s lovely rendition of a stoic and macabre Wednesday Addams, we only ever get to see her in the context of her family.
Those of us who grew up with Ricci’s rendition have been teased for far too long with a grown-up Wednesday since Melissa Hunter created and starred in Adult Wednesday Addams shorts.
Now that we’ve gotten Netflix’s hit series, Wednesday has become a female role model for girls who need someone strong and unapologetic to look up to. In fact, I enjoyed this rendition of Wednesday Addams so much that I wrote an article on how to better achieve her various looks for cosplay and costume ideas.
So go out there and embody your best inner Wednesday Addams!
